Basic Photography Series
Imagine a lifetime painting with 2 colors and suddenly being given a rainbow of colors: this is Photoshop.
Instructor: David Downs
Designed for photographers comfortable with Lightroom or other basic editing programs that want to get even more out of their photos. This Introduction to Photoshop class will help you understand the virtually limitless possibilities when editing your images. If your desire is not just to enhance your photographs but transform them into works of Fine Art then this class is for you.
I signed up for the workshop hoping I’d get a few trophy shots and learn some new skills which I certainly accomplished. What I didn’t expect was to meet a new group of friends, laugh around a campfire, and gain a deep appreciation of the unique location we visited. It’s clear that David and Barry love to share their photographic knowledge with others in a way that’s supportive and sincere. This experience has had a profound impact on my photographic journey.

ArtCentre of Plano – 902 East 16th St., Plano, TX 75074
The Art Centre looks like a big old house and that’s exactly what it is. It is situated in the NW corner of Haggard Park in Historic Downtown Plano. Although it has a front porch and the temptation is to enter from the front, you will want to come in through the gate near the parking spots beside the house and enter across the back porch which faces the park. We will be inside on the 2nd floor. You can take the stairs in the center of the house or the elevator located in the lobby where you entered.

Recommended photography gear
A laptop with Windows or Mac OS and a current/up to date subscribed or trial version of Lightroom Classic and Photoshop
As mentioned in the title for the class, we will be using Adobe Photoshop for our instruction. We will discuss the differences between Adobe Photoshop Desktop & Adobe Photoshop for iPad in the class but it is best to understand the Desktop version and then apply those tools for mobile use when/if you begin using the mobile version. Adobe offers Photoshop in a variety of Plans but the one you will want is the Photography option coupled with Lightroom for $9.99 a month with a 7 day free trial and 20GB of storage. They also offer a similar plan for $19.99 with 1 TB of cloud storage. I would not opt for this at this point as you can always upgrade your storage later if needed. It would be better to figure out your storage methods and typical editing process before making this decision. Once you subscribe to the correct plan you MUST go in and download/install the Photoshop Desktop version onto your PC or Mac. Make certain you can run the program from your desktop without any internet connection. Please do this BEFORE coming to the class as having to do any of the above steps that morning will simply delay the class and take away from our instruction time on editing.
Charging/Power Cable for your Laptop (Outlets/Power strips will be provided
A memory card with RAW images on it and a card reader (built-in or USB version)
Something to take notes with (paper & pen)
Consider a trial or free membership to Kelby One and explore some of his Lightroom Tutorial Options
Location pro tips
Our location is in Haggard Park, a jewel in downtown Plano. There are often ducks and herons in the pond, a fountain, a gazebo, DART Light Rail, artwork and tons of opportunities for Street Photography within a couple of minutes’ walk from the Art Centre. Plan on staying after class for exploration and lunch/drinks in one of the great downtown restaurants (Vickery Park is my favorite).
