The Experience

Experience Yellowstone at its most dramatic and beautiful during winter, when steam rises through snow-covered forests, pastel light settles over mountain ridges, and wildlife moves through a landscape that feels both wild and timeless. This small-group photography workshop is designed for photographers who want to capture intimate wildlife moments and sweeping winter scenery while receiving practical, hands-on guidance in the field. From bison, elk, foxes, and coyotes to geothermal features, mist, and luminous morning and evening light, Yellowstone in winter offers extraordinary opportunities for creating compelling images. Throughout the workshop, participants will benefit from personalized instruction, thoughtful planning, and a supportive learning environment that helps photographers of varying experience levels strengthen both vision and technique. Lodging, transportation during the workshop, meals, image review sessions, and pre- and post-workshop Zoom meetings are included, allowing you to focus on the experience, the learning, and the images you came to create.

Itinerary

Yellowstone Winter Photography Workshop

Day 1 & 2

Days 1 and 2 ease participants into the workshop before launching into a full winter field experience. After arriving in Bozeman, the group transfers to West Yellowstone, settles into the hotel, and gathers for dinner, orientation, and discussion of camera settings, snow coach logistics, and the days ahead. The next morning, after breakfast, the group departs by snow coach for a full day photographing Yellowstone’s winter wildlife, geothermal features, and snowy landscapes, followed by dinner and image review.

Day 3-5

Days 3 through 5 deepen the Yellowstone winter experience with long field days and a shift in scenery. Day 3 begins with another early breakfast and full snow coach day in the park, maximizing opportunities to photograph wildlife, geothermal steam, and snow-covered landscapes under changing conditions. On Day 4, the group departs West Yellowstone and travels to Gardiner, gathering lunch supplies before heading back into the park for additional photography and then settling into the new lodging. Day 5 continues with an early start from Gardiner for a full day in the field, allowing flexibility to pursue the strongest wildlife and landscape opportunities available.

Day 6-7

Days 6 and 7 provide a strong finish to the workshop, with one more full day of photography based out of Gardiner and a final morning in the park before returning to Bozeman. The last day remains flexible depending on participants’ flight schedules. If later flights are booked, the group may stay in the park a bit longer for additional photography. If some participants have earlier departures, the group can be split between the two vehicles to accommodate different airport timelines.

What Our Students Say...

You Walk Away Learning So Much!

I have attended several photography workshops, including with some National names – this one is a class apart. David and Barry bring their down to earth style to the workshop and you walk away learning so much – while actually taking pictures. This is a hands-on lesson – which makes it really interesting. I would absolutely do a workshop with them again.

No Matter Your Skill Level, You Won’t Be Disappointed!

Sign up for a workshop! Through the one on one coaching of David and Barry, I came away with more confidence in my ability to get great landscape and astrophotos. No matter your skill level, you won’t be disappointed.

Taking My Photos To Another Level!

This was a great workshop for me. I learned several things that definitely help take my photos to another level.

Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations

My priorities for a workshop are always to see new places, especially at my age, learn something new, get feedback on my compositions in camera, get ideas for compositions or small scenes or creative ideas that I may not be seeing, meet new people, be in a small group, and offer all of that for an affordable investment. Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations by going above and beyond by adding in a zoom meeting before and after each workshop, by offering editing or critique advice during or after the workshop, and with their friendliness and caring about each participant. Anything else is a bonus. I would highly recommend BDW as one of the top workshop groups in the country. Thanks Barry and David!

Instruction and Independence!

This was a terrific workshop whether you are a beginner or a more experienced photographer. If I needed help or had a question either David or Barry was right there. If I wanted to wander off and work on my own composition, I could do that. The perfect balance of instruction and independence.

One of the very best!

I’ve participated in a number of photographic workshops. This was one of the very best!
