The Experience

Experience the raw beauty of Southern Utah on a workshop designed for photographers who want more than scenic overlooks. From the red rock arches near Moab to the sweeping vistas of Canyonlands, the Colorado River corridor, and the surreal textures near Hanksville, every stop offers bold color, dramatic contrast, and fresh creative possibilities. This small-group experience blends hands-on field instruction with personalized support as you photograph expansive desert scenes, intimate landscapes, and striking geological formations. Along the way, you’ll explore drone photography techniques, panoramas, video capture, and the unique visual potential of infrared imagery. Pre-workshop Zoom sessions help you arrive prepared, and a post-workshop session extends the learning through image sharing, editing ideas, and continued guidance. Southern Utah becomes both classroom and inspiration.

Itinerary

Utah Drone, IR & Photography Workshop

Day 1 - July 15, 2026

Arrival Day & Sunset Shoot

Arrive at Salt Lake City International Airport by 10:30 AM or in Hanksville by 4:00 PM. We will get checked into our rooms, grab some dinner and head out for drone and night sky photography.

Day 2-3

From sunrise to sunset & beyond, our group will enjoy some of the most beautiful landscapes you’ve ever seen and capture them by drone, IR and standard photography methods.   We will be focused primarily in the Hanksville/Factory Butte area and will visit sites like Bentonite Hills, Goblin Valley, Little Wild Horse Canyon & more.

Day 4-5

We broaden the workshop from the sculpted terrain around Hanksville into some of southern Utah’s most varied and rewarding photographic country. We’ll begin with sunrise in the Factory Butte region, then follow the Capitol Reef corridor, stopping for a mix of grand vistas, layered formations, desert textures, and pockets of green that may lend themselves beautifully to infrared work. By evening, we’ll aim for a sunset location that offers a different look from the badlands, potentially among the sculpted forms of Goblin Valley or another strong overlook within reach of Hanksville. On Day 5, we’ll depart for the Canyonlands and Moab region, exploring select stops along the southern approach before finishing with canyon views, dramatic roadside terrain, and a Milky Way session near Dead Horse Point.

Day 6

On our final morning, we’ll head out before dawn to capture one last sunrise, most likely at Mesa Arch or possibly at Dead Horse Point, depending on conditions and the group’s preference. After breakfast and gathering our gear, we may enjoy a final scenic outing along Potash Road if we have not yet explored it, or perhaps make a short visit into Arches National Park. It’s a relaxed closing to the workshop, giving us one more opportunity to photograph the beauty of the area before beginning the trip home.

What Our Students Say...

No Matter Your Skill Level, You Won’t Be Disappointed!

Sign up for a workshop! Through the one on one coaching of David and Barry, I came away with more confidence in my ability to get great landscape and astrophotos. No matter your skill level, you won’t be disappointed.

Instruction and Independence!

This was a terrific workshop whether you are a beginner or a more experienced photographer. If I needed help or had a question either David or Barry was right there. If I wanted to wander off and work on my own composition, I could do that. The perfect balance of instruction and independence.

One of the very best!

I’ve participated in a number of photographic workshops. This was one of the very best!

You Walk Away Learning So Much!

I have attended several photography workshops, including with some National names – this one is a class apart. David and Barry bring their down to earth style to the workshop and you walk away learning so much – while actually taking pictures. This is a hands-on lesson – which makes it really interesting. I would absolutely do a workshop with them again.

Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations

My priorities for a workshop are always to see new places, especially at my age, learn something new, get feedback on my compositions in camera, get ideas for compositions or small scenes or creative ideas that I may not be seeing, meet new people, be in a small group, and offer all of that for an affordable investment. Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations by going above and beyond by adding in a zoom meeting before and after each workshop, by offering editing or critique advice during or after the workshop, and with their friendliness and caring about each participant. Anything else is a bonus. I would highly recommend BDW as one of the top workshop groups in the country. Thanks Barry and David!
