The Experience

The Oregon Coast – Wild & Rugged is a photography workshop for photographers who want dramatic scenery, strong instruction, and meaningful image-making opportunities. Led by David Downs, the workshop explores Oregon’s rugged coastline through beaches, sea stacks, lighthouses, harbors, and changing weather conditions that shape both the landscape and the photographic experience. Designed as more than a sightseeing trip, the workshop emphasizes photographic growth through in-field guidance, help with composition and creative decision-making, and carefully chosen locations. With a small-group approach and personalized instruction, participants will strengthen their vision, build confidence, and return home with memorable images and new skills.

Itinerary

Oregon Coast - Wild & Rugged

Day 1

We will depart the Portland airport area around noon and head into the Columbia River Gorge for our first photography sessions of the workshop. The afternoon will focus on Multnomah Falls and Latourell Falls, giving the group an opportunity to work with waterfall composition, long exposures, tripod technique, and exposure control in a lush Pacific Northwest setting. From there, we will continue west to the coast, arriving at Cannon Beach in time for late afternoon light, evening photography, and sunset around Haystack Rock.

Day 2

The day may begin with an optional sunrise session at Cannon Beach, giving participants a second opportunity to photograph one of Oregon’s most iconic coastal locations in different light and conditions. Afterward, we will begin making our way south, keeping the middle of the day lighter and more flexible to allow for travel, meals, and selective stops as conditions permit. By late afternoon, we will position ourselves in the Cape Perpetua area for our primary sunset target at Thor’s Well, where we can focus on surf patterns, long exposures, wave timing, and dramatic coastal compositions.

Day 3-4

We will continue south along the coast with a focused and visually varied shooting day. Our route is expected to include Coquille River Lighthouse, offering accessible lighthouse and shoreline compositions, followed by Oregon Dunes, where elevated views and crashing surf provide a different photographic feel from the beaches and sea stacks elsewhere on the trip. We will then continue to Bandon Beach, where the late afternoon and sunset session will center on sea stacks, shoreline patterns, and long-exposure coastal imagery. Day 4 will be our major Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor day. Current priority locations include Natural Bridges, Secret Beach, and Pistol River, with the day structured to balance dramatic viewpoints with practical access and group pacing. Natural Bridges is especially important because it offers one of the most iconic views in the corridor with relatively short access, while Secret Beach remains one of the more selective moderate-access stops for those conditions and logistics that make it worthwhile.

Day 5

We plan to begin the day at Stout Grove at sunrise, using the quiet forest light and towering redwoods for a completely different photographic experience from the coast. After approximately two hours there, we will begin making our way north. Because there is no need to arrive early at the airport hotel, the day remains open for one additional meaningful stop depending on weather, light, and how previous conditions unfolded earlier in the trip. At the moment, the preferred option is a possible revisit to Thor’s Well if conditions on Day 2 were poor, though this portion of the day can remain flexible.

Day 6

Departure day. We will leave the hotel no later than 10:00 AM so everyone has time to make flights home comfortably.

What Our Students Say...

Taking My Photos To Another Level!

This was a great workshop for me. I learned several things that definitely help take my photos to another level.

You Walk Away Learning So Much!

I have attended several photography workshops, including with some National names – this one is a class apart. David and Barry bring their down to earth style to the workshop and you walk away learning so much – while actually taking pictures. This is a hands-on lesson – which makes it really interesting. I would absolutely do a workshop with them again.

Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations

My priorities for a workshop are always to see new places, especially at my age, learn something new, get feedback on my compositions in camera, get ideas for compositions or small scenes or creative ideas that I may not be seeing, meet new people, be in a small group, and offer all of that for an affordable investment. Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations by going above and beyond by adding in a zoom meeting before and after each workshop, by offering editing or critique advice during or after the workshop, and with their friendliness and caring about each participant. Anything else is a bonus. I would highly recommend BDW as one of the top workshop groups in the country. Thanks Barry and David!

Instruction and Independence!

This was a terrific workshop whether you are a beginner or a more experienced photographer. If I needed help or had a question either David or Barry was right there. If I wanted to wander off and work on my own composition, I could do that. The perfect balance of instruction and independence.

One of the very best!

I’ve participated in a number of photographic workshops. This was one of the very best!
