To build a grand building, you must start with a proper foundation. The same holds true for creating your portfolio of amazing images.

The Experience

Designed for photographers that want to create an organized process for storing and editing their images. This is a very hands-on workshop. Bring your computer, external hard drives, thumb drives, camera, and SD cards. For the morning, our focus will be on preparing you to edit a lifetime of images and even sort through and organize those thousands of images already piled up on your computer. Once you have a clear understanding of how to organize (catalog) and import your images, the editing workflow will be so much smoother. You will know exactly where your images are and how to find that image from the family reunion 5…or was it 6 years ago? After lunch, we will move into the editing tools available to you and a basic understanding of how to maximize the impact when using those tools.

Transportation

Personal to and from the workshop. No other is needed during class.

Recommended Gear:

  • A laptop with Windows or Mac OS and a current/up-to-date subscribed or trial version of Adobe Lightroom CLASSIC
  • Confirm you can run the program from your computer without any internet connection
  • Charging/power cable for your laptop (outlets/power strips will be provided)
  • A memory card with RAW images on it and a card reader (built-in or USB version)
  • Something for taking notes (paper & pen)

Other Recommendations:

  • It is IMPERATIVE you understand how to create new folders on your computer and to find them once created. Please spend time familiarizing yourself with this process before class to be sure you get the most out of class.
  • We will be using Lightroom CLASSIC for our instruction. We will discuss the difference between Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic but it is best to understand Classic first and then apply those tools for mobile use when/if you begin using the mobile version.
  • Adobe offers several Lightroom Plans. You do NOT want the 1TB storage for $9.99 with 7 day free trial. The one you want is also $9.99 a month and includes Lightroom CC, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Spark, Portfolio, and 20B of cloud storage with a 7 day free trial. While there is a $19.99 1TB storage version of this plan, wait to decide if this is right for you once you have figured out storage methods during class.
  • Consider a free trial to Kelby One and explore some of his Lightroom tutorials.

What Our Students Say...

Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations

My priorities for a workshop are always to see new places, especially at my age, learn something new, get feedback on my compositions in camera, get ideas for compositions or small scenes or creative ideas that I may not be seeing, meet new people, be in a small group, and offer all of that for an affordable investment. Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations by going above and beyond by adding in a zoom meeting before and after each workshop, by offering editing or critique advice during or after the workshop, and with their friendliness and caring about each participant. Anything else is a bonus. I would highly recommend BDW as one of the top workshop groups in the country. Thanks Barry and David!

Taking My Photos To Another Level!

This was a great workshop for me. I learned several things that definitely help take my photos to another level.

Instruction and Independence!

This was a terrific workshop whether you are a beginner or a more experienced photographer. If I needed help or had a question either David or Barry was right there. If I wanted to wander off and work on my own composition, I could do that. The perfect balance of instruction and independence.

You Walk Away Learning So Much!

I have attended several photography workshops, including with some National names – this one is a class apart. David and Barry bring their down to earth style to the workshop and you walk away learning so much – while actually taking pictures. This is a hands-on lesson – which makes it really interesting. I would absolutely do a workshop with them again.

No Matter Your Skill Level, You Won’t Be Disappointed!

Sign up for a workshop! Through the one on one coaching of David and Barry, I came away with more confidence in my ability to get great landscape and astrophotos. No matter your skill level, you won’t be disappointed.
