Photography Skills Series
To build a grand building, you must start with a proper foundation. The same holds true for creating your portfolio of amazing images.
Instructor: David Downs
Designed for photographers that want to create an organized process for storing and editing their images. This is a very hands-on workshop. Bring your computer, external hard drives, thumb drives, camera, and SD cards. For the morning, our focus will be on preparing you to edit a lifetime of images and even sort through and organize those thousands of images already piled up on your computer. Once you have a clear understanding of how to organize (catalog) and import your images, the editing workflow will be so much smoother. You will know exactly where your images are and how to find that image from the family reunion 5…or was it 6 years ago? After lunch, we will move into the editing tools available to you and a basic understanding of how to maximize the impact when using those tools.

Location information
David Downs Photography Studio - 730 E Park Blvd, # 108, Plano TX 75074
My studio is located just east of Hwy 75 in Plano on Park Blvd. My studio is kind of hidden because it doesn't face directly towards the parking lot. If you locate building 730, walk in between it and building 720, and you will see the entrance to my studio.
Transportation
Personal to and from workshop/lunch. No other needed during class.
Recommended photography gear/preparation
A laptop with Windows or Mac OS and a current/up to date subscribed or trial version of Lightroom Classic
It is IMPERATIVE you understand how to create new folders on your PC laptop or Mac and to find them once created. Please spend the time familiarizing yourself with this process before coming to the class. It will truly be the difference between learning all you can and struggling simply to get past step one. Having taught this class many times, I can say with complete confidence it is this single issue that creates the most frustration for students. If you google this subject you will find dozens of videos on how to do this. It's worth every minute you spend watching these, trust me. Make certain you are watching videos created within the last couple of years. For Mac users, the YouTube Channel MacMostVideo seems to be current and comprehensive but easy to understand. For PC users, Professor Adam Morgan has a good video on the basics of file and folder management. You can watch it here.
As mentioned in the title for the class, we will be using LIGHTROOM CLASSIC for our instruction. We will discuss the differences between Lightroom and Lightroom Classic in the class but it is best to understand the Classic version and then apply those tools for mobile use when/if you begin using the mobile version. Adobe offers 3 different Lightroom Plans. One is Lightroom only with 1 TB of cloud storage for $9.99 a month with a 7 day free trial. You do NOT want this plan. The 2nd option is also $9.99 a month and includes Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Spark, Portfolio, and 20 GB of cloud storage with a 7 day free trial. This is the one you want. They also offer a similar plan for $19.99 with 1 TB of cloud storage. I would not opt for this at this point as you can always upgrade your storage later if needed. It would be better to figure out your storage methods (something we will discuss in class) and your typical editing process before making this decision. Once you subscribe to the correct plan you MUST go in and download/install the Lightroom Classic version onto your PC or Mac. Make certain you can run the program from your laptop/Mac without any internet connection. Please do this BEFORE coming to the class as any of the above steps will simply delay the class and take away from our instruction time.
Charging/Power Cable for your Laptop (Outlets/Power strips will be provided)
Memory cards with RAW images, USB's, External Drives and a card reader
Something to take notes with (paper & pen)

Location pro tips
Our location is near downtown Plano. In Haggard park there are often ducks and herons in the pond, a fountain, a gazebo, DART Light Rail, artwork and tons of opportunities for Street Photography. Plan on staying after class for exploration and lunch/drinks in one of the great downtown restaurants (Vickery Park is my favorite).
