The Experience

Scotland is a land of rugged mountains, ancient castles, dramatic coastlines, and ever-changing light. For photographers, its remarkable landscapes and unpredictable weather offer endless creative possibilities. Join us for an immersive photography workshop exploring Scotland's most spectacular locations, from historic Edinburgh to the dramatic Highlands of Glencoe and the breathtaking Isle of Skye. We'll photograph towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, mist-covered lochs, winding rivers, and centuries-old castles. Along the way, we'll seek those extraordinary moments when light, weather, and landscape come together to create something special. Limited to no more than five participants, this workshop offers personal instruction, thoughtful location choices, and time to explore your own photographic vision. We'll work on composition, exposure, creative techniques, and developing images that go beyond simply documenting a beautiful scene. Our schedule will remain flexible to take advantage of changing conditions, because some of Scotland's most memorable photographs happen when the weather has other plans. This is a photography-focused experience, not a sightseeing tour with occasional camera stops. Expect early mornings, incredible scenery, creative exploration, and the camaraderie of fellow photographers. **Our goal is simple: to help you return with photographs that express not just what you saw, but what you felt.**

Itinerary

Welcome to Scotland - Ediburgh

Day 1

Welcome to Scotland - Ediburgh

Our Scottish adventure begins in Edinburgh, a city rich in history, remarkable architecture, and old-world charm. After arriving and settling into our accommodations, we'll gather for introductions and an overview of the photographic experiences ahead.
Depending on arrival times and available light, we'll explore the historic Royal Mile, its narrow passageways, cobblestone streets, and centuries-old buildings. If conditions cooperate, we may finish the evening photographing Edinburgh's skyline from Calton Hill, where the city's historic landmarks create a wonderful setting for our first Scottish sunset.

The Scottish Highlands | Glencoe & Rannoch Moor

Day 2-4

The Scottish Highlands | Glencoe & Rannoch Moor

We'll journey into the heart of the Scottish Highlands, where some of the country's most dramatic and unforgettable landscapes await.
The Glencoe region is a photographer's paradise, with towering mountains, sweeping valleys, tumbling waterfalls, and winding rivers cutting through ancient glacial terrain. Here, shifting clouds and rapidly changing light can transform a familiar scene into something extraordinary in minutes.
We'll explore the rugged beauty of Glencoe, the wide-open wilderness of Rannoch Moor, and the quiet shores of Highland lochs where mist, reflections, and subtle colors offer opportunities for both grand landscapes and intimate compositions.
Our photography will include iconic locations such as Buachaille Etive Mòr, the dramatic Three Sisters, and the rivers and waterfalls that make this region so compelling. We'll also seek quieter, lesser-known viewpoints where the landscape invites a more personal interpretation.
As we head toward the Isle of Skye, we'll visit the magnificent Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland's most recognizable landmarks, beautifully situated where three sea lochs meet.

The Isle of Skye | Scotland's Wild Beauty

Days 5-8

The Isle of Skye | Scotland's Wild Beauty

The Isle of Skye is a place of extraordinary contrasts, where jagged mountain ridges rise above sweeping valleys, rugged cliffs meet the Atlantic, and dramatic skies seem to stretch endlessly across the landscape.
Over three days, we'll explore some of the island's most remarkable photo spots, including the otherworldly formations of the Quiraing, the dramatic coastline around Neist Point, and the spectacular scenery of the Trotternish Peninsula.
We'll encounter ancient stone bridges, cascading waterfalls, quiet Highland lochs, and coastal landscapes shaped by centuries of wind and weather. The colorful harbor of Portree offers a delightful change of pace, with opportunities for architectural details and more intimate scenes.
Skye's unpredictable weather is part of its magic. Passing storms, drifting mist, and brief moments of golden light often create the atmosphere that makes photographs truly memorable.
We'll plan our days around the best available light and conditions, with the flexibility to revisit promising locations or explore unexpected opportunities along the way.

Departure | Edinburgh

Day 9

Departure | Edinburgh

Following breakfast, participants will depart Edinburgh for their journeys home.
You'll leave Scotland with new photographic skills, lasting friendships, and a collection of images that reflect both the grandeur of the Highlands, the Isle of Skye, and your own creative vision.

What Our Students Say...

No Matter Your Skill Level, You Won’t Be Disappointed!

Sign up for a workshop! Through the one on one coaching of David and Barry, I came away with more confidence in my ability to get great landscape and astrophotos. No matter your skill level, you won’t be disappointed.

You Walk Away Learning So Much!

I have attended several photography workshops, including with some National names – this one is a class apart. David and Barry bring their down to earth style to the workshop and you walk away learning so much – while actually taking pictures. This is a hands-on lesson – which makes it really interesting. I would absolutely do a workshop with them again.

Taking My Photos To Another Level!

This was a great workshop for me. I learned several things that definitely help take my photos to another level.

Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations

My priorities for a workshop are always to see new places, especially at my age, learn something new, get feedback on my compositions in camera, get ideas for compositions or small scenes or creative ideas that I may not be seeing, meet new people, be in a small group, and offer all of that for an affordable investment. Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations by going above and beyond by adding in a zoom meeting before and after each workshop, by offering editing or critique advice during or after the workshop, and with their friendliness and caring about each participant. Anything else is a bonus. I would highly recommend BDW as one of the top workshop groups in the country. Thanks Barry and David!

Instruction and Independence!

This was a terrific workshop whether you are a beginner or a more experienced photographer. If I needed help or had a question either David or Barry was right there. If I wanted to wander off and work on my own composition, I could do that. The perfect balance of instruction and independence.

One of the very best!

I’ve participated in a number of photographic workshops. This was one of the very best!
