The Experience

Sedona is one of the most visually striking landscapes in the American Southwest, a place of glowing red rock, winding canyons, sweeping overlooks, and quiet desert beauty. It has all the ingredients of an unforgettable photography destination, which is exactly why we are excited to explore it with you. This is a Scouting Workshop, which means you are joining us in the discovery process. Rather than stepping into a fully polished, long-established itinerary, you’ll be part of the adventure as we evaluate locations, chase promising light, and begin shaping what may become a future Benton Downs Photography workshop. Some locations may become instant standouts. Others may prove less compelling than expected. That is part of what makes a scouting workshop different, and part of what makes it fun. We will photograph a mix of iconic Sedona scenes and lesser-known possibilities, always looking for strong light, thoughtful compositions, and meaningful teaching opportunities. Along the way, we’ll share our process openly so you can see not just where we choose to shoot, but how we decide whether a location is truly workshop-worthy. Because this is a scouting workshop, pricing is intentionally lower than one of our standard workshops. In exchange, we ask participants to come with flexibility, curiosity, and a spirit of creative exploration. As always, our group will be small and supportive, with personal attention in the field. Whether you want help with composition, camera settings, exposure, or learning to respond to changing conditions, we’ll be there to guide you. Together, we’ll explore Sedona’s beauty, create strong images, and discover whether this remarkable landscape deserves a permanent place in the Benton Downs workshop lineup.

Itinerary

Sedona Scouting Photography Workshop – Red Rock Light & Desert Discovery

Day 1

We’ll gather in Sedona in the afternoon for check-in, orientation, and workshop preparation before heading out for our first sunset session. Our opening evening will likely center on an easy-access classic such as Airport Mesa or another overlook that gives us a strong introduction to Sedona’s red rock landscape. Afterward, we’ll enjoy dinner together and talk through the plan for the days ahead.

Day 2

The day begins with a sunrise session in one of Sedona’s strongest morning areas, likely around Bell Rock, Courthouse Vista, or Yavapai Vista. After breakfast and a midday rest break, we’ll meet for a Lightroom and image review session before heading back into the field for sunset. The evening will likely focus on one of Sedona’s iconic red rock locations, while still leaving flexibility for us to respond to conditions and continue evaluating workshop potential.

Day 3

We’ll start with another sunrise session, either revisiting a strong location or exploring a new one based on what we learned on the previous day. After breakfast and downtime, we’ll meet for a critique and image discussion session. Later in the afternoon, we’ll scout additional locations and then move into our main sunset shoot. Because this is a scouting workshop, this day remains intentionally flexible so we can adapt to light, access, and what we discover together.

Day 4

On our final morning, we’ll head out for one last sunrise session before returning to the hotel area for breakfast, checkout, and departures. We expect to wrap up by late morning, giving everyone time to begin the trip home.

What Our Students Say...

Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations

My priorities for a workshop are always to see new places, especially at my age, learn something new, get feedback on my compositions in camera, get ideas for compositions or small scenes or creative ideas that I may not be seeing, meet new people, be in a small group, and offer all of that for an affordable investment. Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations by going above and beyond by adding in a zoom meeting before and after each workshop, by offering editing or critique advice during or after the workshop, and with their friendliness and caring about each participant. Anything else is a bonus. I would highly recommend BDW as one of the top workshop groups in the country. Thanks Barry and David!

Instruction and Independence!

This was a terrific workshop whether you are a beginner or a more experienced photographer. If I needed help or had a question either David or Barry was right there. If I wanted to wander off and work on my own composition, I could do that. The perfect balance of instruction and independence.

You Walk Away Learning So Much!

I have attended several photography workshops, including with some National names – this one is a class apart. David and Barry bring their down to earth style to the workshop and you walk away learning so much – while actually taking pictures. This is a hands-on lesson – which makes it really interesting. I would absolutely do a workshop with them again.

No Matter Your Skill Level, You Won’t Be Disappointed!

Sign up for a workshop! Through the one on one coaching of David and Barry, I came away with more confidence in my ability to get great landscape and astrophotos. No matter your skill level, you won’t be disappointed.
