The Experience

Yosemite in winter is one of the most dramatic and rewarding landscape photography experiences in the American West. Snow, mist, waterfalls, granite cliffs, bare trees, reflections, and changing light create endless opportunities for powerful images throughout Yosemite Valley. This special scouting edition of our Yosemite Winter and Firefall Photography Workshop is timed for the annual Horsetail Fall “Firefall” phenomenon, when the setting sun can illuminate the waterfall in a brilliant orange glow. While Firefall conditions are never guaranteed, we will give ourselves multiple sunset opportunities while also photographing Yosemite’s classic winter landscapes, waterfalls, reflections, intimate scenes, and grand views. As a scouting workshop, this experience is offered at a reduced price for photographers who are comfortable with flexibility, patience, and discovery. Barry and DeLania will have a clear plan, strong location research, and a thoughtful daily structure, but part of the purpose of this workshop is to refine the best timing, locations, logistics, and teaching flow for future Yosemite workshops. Some ideas may work beautifully, some may shift because of weather, access, crowds, or light, and we will make those decisions together in the field. Based at Yosemite Valley Lodge, this small-group workshop is designed for photographers who want thoughtful in-field instruction, flexible planning, and a supportive community experience. Each day will be shaped by weather, light, water flow, park access, and participant safety. When conditions allow, we will position the group for Firefall; when they do not, we will shift to Yosemite’s other winter subjects, including waterfalls, granite walls, reflections, meadows, moonlight, and dramatic valley light. With lodging and local workshop transportation included, this experience is designed to help you focus on photography, learning, and making the strongest images possible during one of Yosemite’s most memorable seasons.

Itinerary

Yosemite Winter and Firefall Photography Workshop

Day 1

Participants will gather mid-afternoon at Yosemite Valley Lodge for introductions, orientation, and a workshop briefing. We will review the schedule, winter safety considerations, Firefall logistics, park access rules, and the flexible nature of photographing Yosemite in February. Because this is an arrival day and Yosemite Valley is expected to be very busy by late afternoon, we will not plan a Firefall attempt on the first evening. Instead, we will photograph a nearby Yosemite Valley winter location, using the session to get familiar with conditions, camera settings, and the rhythm of working in cold-weather landscape photography. Possible subjects may include Yosemite Falls, Cook’s Meadow, valley walls, reflections, or blue-hour scenes close to the Lodge.

Days 2-3

Each day will begin before sunrise with a field session in Yosemite Valley, photographing morning light, winter atmosphere, waterfalls, reflections, or clearing storm conditions if present. After breakfast at or near the Lodge, participants will have time to rest, recharge, download images, and prepare for the afternoon/evening session. Conditions and park access permitting, we will make planned Firefall attempts from approved viewing areas, with instruction focused on composition, lens selection, exposure strategy, timing, and working creatively within a crowded but extraordinary natural event. If Firefall conditions do not develop, we will pivot to alternate Yosemite Valley winter subjects.

Day 4

We begin again with a sunrise field session in Yosemite Valley, choosing the location based on weather, road conditions, and the strongest available light. After breakfast and rest, we will prepare for the most promising afternoon/evening plan. This date falls near the full moon, giving us the possibility of photographing Yosemite by moonlight if skies cooperate. Our primary plan, conditions permitting, will be a third serious Firefall attempt. If Firefall conditions are poor, or if moonrise timing and access create a better photographic opportunity, we may shift to an alternate sunset or moonrise location such as Tunnel View. After dark, if conditions are safe and the group has enough energy, we may photograph moonlit Yosemite Valley, including possibilities such as Yosemite Falls, granite walls, or winter night landscapes.

Days 5-6

Our final full workshop day remains intentionally flexible. By this point, we will have a better read on weather, snow and ice conditions, water flow, crowd patterns, and participant energy. We will choose the best sunrise location available and use the middle of the day for rest, image review, editing discussion, or nearby field instruction. The evening plan will be based on the strongest conditions. Possibilities include a final Firefall opportunity, a Yosemite Valley sunset location, Tunnel View, or a full-moon landscape session.

On the final morning, we will close the workshop with an optional sunrise session near Yosemite Valley Lodge or another nearby Yosemite Valley location, followed by breakfast, wrap-up discussion, and departure.

What Our Students Say...

You Walk Away Learning So Much!

I have attended several photography workshops, including with some National names – this one is a class apart. David and Barry bring their down to earth style to the workshop and you walk away learning so much – while actually taking pictures. This is a hands-on lesson – which makes it really interesting. I would absolutely do a workshop with them again.

Instruction and Independence!

This was a terrific workshop whether you are a beginner or a more experienced photographer. If I needed help or had a question either David or Barry was right there. If I wanted to wander off and work on my own composition, I could do that. The perfect balance of instruction and independence.

Taking My Photos To Another Level!

This was a great workshop for me. I learned several things that definitely help take my photos to another level.

Marian K

One of the very best!

I’ve participated in a number of photographic workshops. This was one of the very best!

No Matter Your Skill Level, You Won’t Be Disappointed!

Sign up for a workshop! Through the one on one coaching of David and Barry, I came away with more confidence in my ability to get great landscape and astrophotos. No matter your skill level, you won’t be disappointed.

Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations

My priorities for a workshop are always to see new places, especially at my age, learn something new, get feedback on my compositions in camera, get ideas for compositions or small scenes or creative ideas that I may not be seeing, meet new people, be in a small group, and offer all of that for an affordable investment. Benton Downs meets and exceeds my expectations by going above and beyond by adding in a zoom meeting before and after each workshop, by offering editing or critique advice during or after the workshop, and with their friendliness and caring about each participant. Anything else is a bonus. I would highly recommend BDW as one of the top workshop groups in the country. Thanks Barry and David!
