The title above probably makes perfect sense for those who have joined us at Caddo Lake. If you haven’t yet been there, well, let me explain. Invariably, when a new visitor arrives along the shores of Caddo Lake (or one of its miles of bayous), there is an initial sense of displacement, as though they’ve traveled back a few million years. Visions of flying reptiles and gigantic lumbering beasts snacking on the treetops are inevitable. One word that comes to their mind when viewing the incredible canvas of Caddo Lake is simply awe. Or wonderment. Or astonishment…and they want MORE.
During our three workshops in November, all of our participants experienced the emotions listed above and more. The lake excels at surprising photographers with weather curve balls and atmospheric presence. Participating in the game are the numerous bird species that stay stubbornly hidden or practically land on the boat.
Each of our groups found unique photography opportunities that were not afforded to the others. Owls are always a big hit, and Group 1 hit a home run with a pair of owls sitting next to each other on a branch. Our boat captain said he’s not seen that in 20 years on the lake.
Our second group did not see owls despite our best efforts to call them in, but instead found the eagles that were so shy before.
Even more impressive was the fog bank that rolled in during one outing. There’s usually some mist on the water with a brilliant gold light from sunrise, but this was a fog more commonly associated with San Francisco Bay. The fog was so thick you couldn’t see trees more than thirty or forty feet away. It gave us great opportunities for fantastic moody shots and as we moved out of the fog, some incredible light on the lake for gorgeous images.
The third group had to deal with some rain and missed a boat ride due to the weather but found the eagles once more and some great moody shots with rain on the lake. (Image below by Danny Pickens).
Our workshops for 2025 are already almost full, with one date sold out and another half full. I am confident that once again, the lake will deliver as it has every time we’ve visited. It might not be exactly what you expect, but the opportunities will present themselves, and we’ll be there to help you capture them. What I’m looking forward to the most is the new friendships and camaraderie that develop in every workshop. It’s a joy to watch friendships blossom, and new participants create lasting bonds with new photography buddies as they plan their next adventure with Benton Downs!
Our Alumni community is a huge plus to all who join. Check out our upcoming workshops and join us for another adventure!
